The present Chez Willie site is rich in history, located a
few feet away from what was once the old Nassau
Sponge Exchange on West Bay Street and the jewel-like
waters of the Western Esplanade. Owner and Restaurateur,
Willie Armstrong has not only restored the dignity and
charm of the premises, but transcended its former glory
by rendering Chez Willie an impeccable upscale restaurant
where the only thing more enjoyable than the sumptuous
cuisine is the service.
Constructed around the middle of the 19th Century, the stout-walled facility once
served as a prison, the famed White Gates Restaurant, and an Italian goumet
diner named 'Da Vinci'.
Out-of-town guests at White Gates included former U.S. President Richard
Nixon and celebrities such as "Old Blue Eyes" Frank Sinatra.
A fire in 1989 destroyed the restaurant, and for years it remained unoccupied.
That is until 1998, when the visionary Willie Armstrong and his family pooled
resources, leased, refurbished, and reopened the facility. Since that time Chez
Willie has been at the forefront of Gourmet French Dining in Downtown Nassau.
Such a challenging venture had long been an ambition of Willie Armstrong's, who
had spent many years as Maitre'd at the five-star Graycliff Restaurant, where he
perfected his skills as a restaurateur from the front door to the kitchen.
